The Future is Now

This is the face of an energetic, creative and resourceful 7 year old (happens to be me) who had NO IDEA she had to come up with a "career" at some point.

Waaaaayyyy in the future.

And then that future became the present - sometime around the deadlines for college applications and she STILL had no idea but what the hell, write down something that sounds interesting.

And then even later, this curious kid, now a young woman, fell into a giant software company after having the bright idea to bring her resume to look at an apartment to share - with a Microsoft recruiter.

Seems like a cool story, right?

It was - until things fell apart.
As they always will when your needs and wants no longer match who you are, have become.

I had NO IDEA what to do next. How to even take the first step.

What I did have:
πŸ˜• vague ideas
πŸ˜• reactionary ideas (I hate reorgs! I want to fix them!)
πŸ˜• expensive ideas (I have to go to grad school! which one?)
πŸ˜• sad ideas (of the crappy things I was telling myself because I hadn't figured it out)
πŸ˜• lists (and lists) of ideas
πŸ˜• career test results (wtf?)
πŸ˜• too many books on my shelf
πŸ˜• once, even a visit to a shaman

You get the gist.

I had NO IDEA how to devise viable ideas - and then make small steps to test them out.

You have probably heard the outcome: 5 years of indecision and $80,000 spent on a grad school education (and a cross country move!) that still didn't give me the answer.

No one teaches us how to explore, prototype, experiment into "what do I really want?"

NOW I know how to do it. And I can show YOU, too.
